Ante-natal appointments – new right to time off work

From 1 October, a pregnant woman’s husband, civil partner or partner will be able to accompany her to up to two ante-natal appointments. This right also applies to surrogate parents who meet the conditions for, and intend to apply for, a parental order for the child born through a surrogacy arrangement.

The right is to take unpaid leave for up to two of the woman’s ante-natal appointments, with a maximum of 6 hours and 30 minutes for each appointment. It applies to employees from the first day of their employment, (that is, there is no qualifying period) and to some agency workers.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has produced guidance on this new right. It is available from the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk .
